ANSI 54-1 High Quality Porcelain Guy Strain Insulators
A strain insulator serves the dual purpose of providing both mechanical tension and electrical isolation in low-voltage distribution lines or communication cables. It is primarily used at points where the wire must be anchored and kept taut, such as at dead-ends, corners, or where the line crosses a road. In these locations, the wire is subject to significant pull, and without this insulator, it would connect directly to the grounded pole or metal hardware, creating a dangerous electrical fault path to the ground. The strain insulator, with its robust insulating body, acts as a critical barrier. It mechanically withstands the tensile load to keep the wire securely in place while simultaneously preventing current flow, ensuring both the structural integrity and electrical safety of the line. In essence, it functions as a strong, insulating anchor.
